I am Shawn Bramlett. Forty years a Port Aransas beach goer. Twenty years on the lines. This is my night fly guide: where to stand, how the beach works after sunset, and what Southern Lights actually puts in the air when the wind allows.

I’m Shawn Bramlett. Lead kite flyer for Southern Lights LED Kites. Forty years a Port Aransas beach goer. Twenty years on the lines.

Port Aransas is my home beach. I have been on this sand for about forty years — Mustang Island, the Gulf sky, the way the evening breeze dies or holds. Kites came with time on the lines. About twenty years. You learn wind here the slow way. You learn that a day fly and a night fly are not the same job.

In daylight a kite is color against blue. After dark, LED kites are how you still read a shape from the Port Aransas sand — nautilus, jellyfish, dragon, octopus, character lights — when the wind is up. People come to watch. People come to fly. Either way they need a clear stretch and an honest account of how this beach works after sunset.

I wrote this guide for that job. Dated on purpose. Fall 2026 is Fall 2026. When the season turns, I write a new board. The old one stays archived. Fly It Port A hosts the day fests. I lead the night crew. I do not own the day festival.

What is a night fly / nite fly in Port Aransas

A night fly in Port Aransas is LED kites after dark on Mustang Island. Locals also write nite fly. Night kites, nite kites, and LED night kites are the same sky — lit shapes over the Port Aransas beach when the wind is up.

Tourism kite blogs describe night kites in one soft paragraph and point you to a pier and “east of town.” Fine for a postcard. Useless when you are actually trying to find the lights. Here is the local answer: markers 13–15, after dark, when the wind holds.

You can come only to watch. You can come to fly your own. Southern Lights sells LED kites and books night shows. We do not promise a fly every evening. Wind decides.

Where to watch: beach markers 13–15

Stand on Port Aransas beach markers 13, 14, and 15. That is the Southern Lights night stretch — not the Horace Caldwell Pier, not “east of town,” and not the full markers 1–20 band Fly It Port A uses on festival Saturdays. Day fests often set up around 10am, weather permitting. Do not confuse a Saturday day crowd with our night pin. Different hours. Different job. Sometimes the same weekend if the wind holds after dark.

How to get to markers 13–15

By car or truck: beach access onto the sand, permit on the windshield if you park, 15 mph, look for the numbered markers, aim 13–15.

By golf cart: legal Port A streets (posted 35 mph and under), legal Hwy 361 crossings only, then a beach access. Carts are motor vehicles here — seat belts, no dunes, no highway cruise. On foot: walking on is free. No beach parking permit required to walk. The sticker is for parking a motorized vehicle on the sand.

Do not cut through dunes. Do not invent a shortcut that is not a marked access.

Parking, beach permit, and 15 mph on the sand

If you park on the sand, you need a Port Aransas beach parking permit — a ~$12-class annual sticker. City Hall, the Welcome Center, grocery stores, and convenience stores sell it. Southern Lights does not sell the permit. Drive 15 mph on the sand.

Stay out of the dunes. Yield to people, kids, and anglers. Bollards mark driving versus recreation — park on the dune side of the bollards where the city expects vehicles; watch and fly on the open sand with room for lines.

Beach etiquette for a night fly

A night fly shares the same public sand as walkers, anglers, and families. The lights look like a show. The beach is still a neighborhood.

  • Give flyers line room. Walk upwind of active lines. Do not step into a launch.
  • Stay out of dune vegetation. Stay off bird feeding flocks.
  • Pets leashed. Kids clear of the lines.
  • No glass on the beach.
  • Soft voices after dark — this is a beach neighborhood, not a stadium PA.
  • Pack out trash. Leave markers 13–15 clean.
  • Cameras welcome. Your body is not part of the kite.

Best time for a night fly — and how late

The honest window is after dark on a night with wind. When Southern Lights flies, lights often stay up until about 10–10:30pm. Wind decides whether the night happens. There is no guaranteed nightly calendar on this page.

Festival Saturdays draw a daytime crowd — then, if the wind holds, a night fly on the same beach. Private booked nights are a separate call. More on best time.

What wind do you need?
Enough steady wind to fly the kite. We do not invent a knot number on this page. If the Gulf is dead flat, the lights stay down.
Is there a night fly every night?
No.
Can kids watch a night fly?
Yes. Keep them clear of the lines and the launch sand. Bring a light jacket — Gulf nights cool off.
How do I get there by golf cart?
